God’s Unconditional Love – What it really means?

If you are doubting if there is something called God’s unconditional love, I’d like to clear all your doubts today. Indeed, there is such thing called unconditional love and it comes from the God. In contrast, there is also something called conditional love. This kind of love is not good. It involves manipulation, coerce and a judgemental dimension. It is based on the concert of “do this, and I might just love you”.

That’s not the way our Father in heaven loves us. He loves us so much in a way that we cannot always express. He loves us unconditionally.
However, we hear people talk about God’s unconditional love without understanding what it means. People use these words carelessly everytime. They don’t really know the meaning and impact it carries.

To find out what unconditional love means, we need to go back to the Bible. We need to know what the word of God says about it. The Bible is where every Christian must seek to know about the character of God. There are many attributes of God: attributes such as God’s holiness, God’s goodness, God’s sovereignty, and all these attributes all stem from his personality of love. The goodness, righteousness and the life he gives are all sheer expressions of his love.

1 John:4.7
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”

John:3.16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16 shows the extent of God’s love for the world. He loved us to the extent that he was willing to sacrifice his own son for our sins. And that’s what he did, he sent Jesus to bear the sin of the world. Anyone who accepts this offer of God’s love can then have an access to commune with God. The new birth that a man receives at the point of salvation is no ordinary phenomenon. It is the manifestation of the unconditional love of God. It is unconditional because that love didn’t give up on that man and that love led that same man to the place of total surrender to Christ. What could beat that?

A perfect example God’s unconditional love is seen in the lives of the historical stubborn and obstinate Israelites as Moses led them to the Promised Land. Despite everything they did, irrespective of how many times they complained and sinned, God still loved them unconditionally. See what God says about Israel;

Jer 31:3
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness”

The Bible also says this about God’s love:

Nehemiah 9:17
“You are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them (the Israelites).”

As you can see, God’s love for us is uncalculating, it is not motivated by selfish gains. Now, unconditional love does not mean that God loves sin and will keep tolerating a sinner who delights in his/her sin. No. God is a righteous God who hates iniquity. However, the love of God is so great that He has provided a way out for everyone out of sin. Any sinner that comes to God for salvation, no matter how his vile or evil, God’s love is large enough to redeem such person. The purpose of God’s unconditional love is wholly for the purpose of redemption. The love of God longs to provide a way of redemption for everyone who comes to God and accepts his love.
