Perfecting Holiness in the fear of God

2 Corinthians 7:1 (NKJV)

“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

The teachings of holiness can be seen throughout the Bible, from the Old Testament laws given to the Israelites to the New Testament teachings of Jesus and the apostles. It is an essential aspect of a right relationship with God and a life that is pleasing to Him. Holiness involves being separate from sin and the world and consecrated to God’s service. It entails making a conscious effort to emulate God’s character of love, righteousness, and truth. Achieving holiness also requires surrendering oneself to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and permitting Him to transform us from within.

The concept of holiness unto God highlights the significance of leading a life that is devoted to God and embodies His nature. In the Old Testament, holiness is closely linked to the notion of being consecrated for God’s intended use, with objects, animals, and people being referred to as holy. In the New Testament, apostle Peter reminds Christians that they are a holy priesthood, set apart to offer spiritual sacrifices to God (1 Peter 2:9). Apostle Paul also exhorts believers to be holy, saying that God has called us to be holy as He is holy. Therefore, he urges us to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit and perfect holiness in the fear of God. This is exemplified by the chosen people, the Israelites, who were called to obey God’s commandments and reverence Him.

Ultimately, holiness is not something that we can achieve on our own. It is a gift God gives us through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a perfectly holy life and sacrificed Himself to make us righteous before God.

1 Corinthians 1:30 (NKJV)

“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption”

As we trust in Him and seek to follow Him, we can experience the transforming power of God’s grace in our lives and become more and more like Him. The goal of holiness is for our lives to glorify God and for us to enjoy a close relationship with Him. As we pursue holiness, we become more like Christ and can better fulfill our God-given purpose in life.

To be holy, there are several steps of faith to take. I will briefly highlight some key points that can help all believers in their journey of perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

1. Develop a personal relationship with God: After accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you need to desire growth in your relationship with Him. You can do that through prayer, Bible study, and fellowshipping with other believers. These three are fundamental to fostering a relationship with God. There is no way around it. We expect to grow in relationship with someone we don’t spend time with.

2. Obey God’s commands: The Bible guides how to live a holy life, so reading and studying the Scriptures and following what they teach is essential. It’s not enough to avoid sin; we must also run away from any form of it. We also must treat others with love and respect and live a life of service to God.

3. Cultivate the fruits of the Spirit: The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). As you seek to live a holy life, ask God to help you develop these qualities. These gifts will be evidence of your spiritual growth and transformation.

4. Serve others: Jesus taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39) and serve others in His name. Look for opportunities to help others and share the love of Christ with them. Follow the example of Jesus. He was humble, and he served his disciples.

5. Seek accountability: It’s important to have other believers who can support and hold you accountable as you seek to live a holy life (James 5:16). This can include joining a small group or having an accountability partner and being subject to church authority.

6. Seek the guidance and accountability of other believers: Surround yourself with other Christians can help you stay on track and grow in your faith (Hebrews 10:25). The quote that says “the devil targets lone wolfs” is true.

7. Serve others and share your faith with those around you: Living a holy life is more than avoiding sin. We also have to actively do good and share the love of Christ with others (Matthew 28: 18-20). We are called to good works, and we are enabled to do good works through the strength of Christ. You can use all those opportunities of service to share the good news.

8. Cultivate a heart of gratitude and praise toward God: Always recognize and thank God for His blessings and grace. This will help you stay focused on Him, and you will grow in your love for Him (Titus 2:11-14).
